Impressive

Read an article on the Times of India online:

" Say no to dowry to get job "

It reads as follows

"The Haryana government Thursday announced that all new employees would have to furnish a declaration that they had not taken or given dowry, or would ask for it at the time of marriage.

The declaration will have to be signed by the person concerned, his wife, father-in-law and father. It will have to be submitted to the respective head of department at the time of joining service.

Women joining government service would be required to submit a declaration that they had not given dowry."

It felt good to read this article. I wish it would make headline news, rather than being the third-last article on the web page.

This is a good start! There could be loopholes though. As a part of the dowry given, the signature on this paper might also be needed by the respective concerned. I feel, jailing people demanding dowry is more appropriate. Some of my Andhra friends would strongly oppose though ;)

at last found this post. The news should have been headline news, instead of hard to find news.

I doubt such acts would be that helpful. There can be many loopholes, but this is a good start!

And it sure is time, TOI became more responsible and put this up front!!

Brat, Maverick,

On that, I miss the good old news paper, yaar!

You know, its just more natural, I guess, to scan through and locate the article you want to read.

Web pages (with a lot of links) are weird, and the TOI web pages are weirder!

Very refreshing indeed !

My observation: Dowry is on its way down. Although people still practice it, the educated bunch, have learnt to say no !

Dinesh,

I agree, dowry is on its way down!

And yet another reason to campaign for education.

Read another article today, on a proposed amendment to the anti-sati law (courtesy TOI again). I did not know such things even occur these days, that the government feels the need for a change. Scary thought!
